The cave under a rock overhang in Mitchell River National Park is a significant place for the Gunaikurnai people, the traditional owners of the land. It’s called the Den of Nargun, with the Nargun being a fierce half-human, half-rock creature who lives in the cave.

The Nargun is said to have the power to turn spears or boomerangs back so they hit their owner. It also has a reputation for luring travelers into its den. The Gunaikurnai tell of the Nargun abducting children who wandered without adult support. This helps children remember the dangers of getting lost.

Depending on the season and rainfall levels, the Den may or may not be hidden behind a waterfall.

Know Before You Go

The walk into the Den takes approximately 15 minutes each way, and is on a rather steep track so perhaps not suited for those who are less physically able. The walk can be combined as a circuit walk along the Mitchell River, with the option to also visit Deadcock Den, another geological and spiritual landmark.
